Room 18 authors create worlds with words ... check out these similes!

Betty Buckley, Year 6, Room 18

The sky’s reflection glistens on the crystal clear water, as the sun shimmers on the pure, white sand. The birds swoop into the water before resurfacing, their catch dangling from their beaks, wings sparkling, bursting with exotic shades. People glide over emerald waves, their skin browned by the sun, as picnics are placed onto busily patterned mats to be eaten by many.

The friendly atmosphere of the foreign passers by and the encouraging yells of people playing casual games envelopes the beautiful, clean beach like a present in a parcel. Fluent Thai chatter floods the beach, as loud as a herd of elephants, while the sound of the waves adds to the noise.

This place is special to me because I enjoy the friendliness of the beach, the waves and the surfing. It is my special place.

Nicholas Bennett, Year 5, Room 18

The luxurious bed is as comfy as an extremely fluffy rug. The blue wall is as azure as a shimmering river and the floor is spacious.

It’s the perfect place for me to escape to when I’m stressed or mad. When I’m in there, there are a lot of BOOMS and BANGS from my terrific Nerf guns. The closet is as full as a tree covered in leaves.

My room is big enough to have two friends for a sleepover and there is enough room for me and my sister. Once I played a game of hide and seek with Rumi and it took him eight minutes to find me, because I was hiding under my bed, under my bean bag.

Sinead McKennan – Mahon, Year 6, Room 18

The leaves were slimy like a frog brushing against my delicate skin. The branches (of the tree) were like witch’s fingers casting a spell on me.  I crunched the leaves as if I they were paper. The ladybug was like a spider climbing up the thick bark.

  1. These similies are impressive. I just love how the branches of the tree are described as witches fingers casting a spell. Well done.
